Lions Begin New Chapter in Boys Basketball Program
The Providence Academy Athletics Department is pleased to announce new leadership for the boys basketball program. Mr. Steve Brown will lead as the new Head Coach and Mr. Mike McCollow will serve as the new Director of Basketball Operations, organizing development camps and clinics.
Coach Brown is a product of Hamlin High School, located in Hayti, South Dakota. As a prep sports player, Brown earned All State lauds three times each in both basketball and football. After graduation, Brown matriculated to South Dakota State University (SDSU). At SDSU, he was an All-North Central Conference player as a junior and senior and was All-District First Team for both of those seasons. As a Jackrabbit, he was also voted MVP in baseball and basketball.
In 2010, Brown was inducted into the SDSU Hall of Fame and named a charter member of the South Dakota Basketball Hall of Fame. Mr. Brown has a deep and rich coaching resume. He coached at Elkton High School in Elkton, South Dakota; served as an Assistant Coach at SDSU, Dickinson State and the University of Minnesota, and also held the title of Head Coach at Michigan Tech University.
For the past ten years, Brown has served as Director of the Minnesota Timberwolves Basketball Academy, where he has coached some of the top talent in AAU basketball; he has coached players in both the NBA and WNBA.
When asked, “why do you want to coach at Providence Academy,” Brown said, “It would be an honor to represent Providence Academy, where students can not only attain a quality education but have the opportunity to be involved in programs at the highest level that teach life skills. I’m looking forward to working with our players, coaches, administration, parents and fans of Providence Academy in all aspects, from the basketball court to the classroom, all while helping student-athletes develop life skills.”
Mr. Mike McCollow graduated from Bloomington Kennedy High School, where he is an inductee of the Kennedy Hall of Fame. He was an All State, All Conference, MVP and captain of his 1984 State Tournament team. McCollow went on to play collegiately at Avila University, where, as a captain, he tied the NAIA and NCAA record for consecutive made three-point baskets in 1988.
McCollow has coached basketball at the NBA, European, NCAA Division 1 and professional minor league levels. His resume includes stints as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors under former Timberwolves player and Head Coach Sam Mitchell, head coach for one of the top teams in Poland and in the European Basketball Leagues, assistant coach in the CBA for former Timberwolves Head Coach Flip Saunders, and coach in the NCAA Division 1 at Oklahoma State University for current Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton and at The University of North Texas under current SMU Head Coach Tim Jankovich.
Beyond his coaching experience, McCollow also spent four years as an Emmy Award-winning basketball analyst for Fox Sports covering the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Milwaukee Bucks. McCollow has directed camps for several NBA players and coaches and has lectured on shooting and ball-handling all over the country as well as in Belgium, Poland, Canada and Ireland.
For the past five years, McCollow has served as the golf coach for the Edina High School Boys Varsity team, where he just won the 2019 Minnesota AAA State Championship. The program won four Section 6 AAA championships and during his tenure there, the program finished first, second, third, and fourth in State Championships.
